Sad
Not that anyone cares, or that anyone knew who he was, but Bill Mauldin died today.
As I was growing up in this small town of Eagle Pass, with no other Mauldins around but my mom, I often wondered where this name I have came from and if it meant anything. When I tried looking up the name (this is back before the Internet, remember), the only Mauldin of any stature I could find was Bill Mauldin. My father even had a collection of his cartoons from World War II. I took pride in showing that book to my friends and saying, "See? There are other Mauldins and this one is famous." Now he is "was famous." Maybe not famous to everyone, but just famous enough for me.
I never met Bill Mauldin. I can't claim to have thought too much about him over the years. But today as I read that he had passed away, it made me sad, but it also remember how proud he made one little kid, growing up in a small town in Texas, feel about sharing that same name.
