Back On The Chain Gang
They didn't chain everybody on the chain gang but they chained Clinton Wendell Paul.
"Fourteen links. It felt funny, at first. They don't take 'em off. You go to sleep at night, you wrap a towel around because the metal's so cold. You go to the bathroom you got to tell the guard first — `Gettin' up, boss!' — and then you tie a string around the chain to hold it up, so it don't make noise."
That was in the prison road camp in DeLand, 1952. He wore the chain for three months, punishment for something or other — he can't remember what.
He was sent up because he robbed a man.
"I'm tired of seeing your face," the judge had said. The honorable Ben C. Willard. Funny, what you cannot forget. "Now I'm gonna stick you somewhere for good."
