"What a stupid I am."

-- Roberto De Vicenzo

Roberto said this after signing for a wrong score (a 4 instead of a 3) thus losing to Bob Goalby instead of participating in a playoff.

And this wasn't for just any tournament. It was for the Masters, where a win would have guaranteed a spot in the tournament for as long as he could play (at least until a couple of years ago.) Plus, a bunch of money and other appearances in tournaments around the world for years to come. It must have made him sick. At least he didn't do it the other way. If he would have signed for a three when he scored 4 he would have been disqualified. Bummer.

On a lighter note, Goalby received death threats regularly over several decades for having the audacity to acutally add his score correctly and play a very good 4 rounds of golf. It doesn't make sense, so I understand........

Circa 1976? Nope. Monday Retro

Here's my last Monday post. I thought it was worth publishing.

Happy to be Here

Yesterday (Sunday) I was on my way to Cedar City for the SEDC Boot Camp when I learned of a major network outage. Dan Patterson called me as I was leaving the EBC parking lot and heading south. He said that Paul Symonds was on his way into EBC to get an ATM card out of Core 2. Then he would be heading to Price. The card in our router at CEU had failed, taking down our OC-3 that serves Moab and points south. There were no spares on site, so it necessitated the trip by Paul.

I ran into Tony, the NOC Manager, on my way to look for Paul. He was on the phone with Scott, making arrangements to have him drive to Price. I was on my way south, so it only made sense for me to drop by Price. After all, I was out on a Sunday and would not be returning home tonight. No big deal for me and it would have taken someone 4 or more hours to complete the run to Price from Salt Lake. So I took the card.

When I arrived at CEU Galyen met me at the door. He said he didn't need anything more from me, so I was back on the road right away. Before I left Price I got a call from Jeff Egly, Field Ops Manager. Jeff told me that the problem was resolved. Everything came up and worked as soon as Gaylen replaced the ATM card. Then Jeff thanked me profusely for my help. I was a bit embarrassed. I really didn't do much. But I was glad to be helpful. It was my honor and privilege to do my small part. I thought about my conversation with Jeff as I headed south through Emery County on my way to Cedar City.

Here's the way I see it:

Thanks to Jeff, Gaylen, Paul, Tony, Scott and Dan.

Thanks for being there at the end of a long weekend when it would have been much easier to be with your families.

Thanks for being there the first weekend after receiving notification of your 1.5% raise. You probably realized a slight pay decrease after adding the higher cost of benefits.

Thanks for showing up on a Sunday afternoon after answering calls until 3:00 AM that morning.

Thanks for your professionalism and your knowledge.

Thanks for working on the weekend even though we burdened you with too many meetings last week.

Thanks for watching over the network and responding, even though you know that school isn't in session.

Thanks for taking care of our customers, even though you don't always hear encouraging words from them.

Most of all, thanks for working with me. I'm happy to be here.........
