Jim's Pond - Exploring the Universe of Ideas
"Beware when the great God lets loose a thinker on this planet. Then all things are at risk. It is as when a conflagration has broken out in a great city, and no man knows what is safe, or where it will end." --Ralph Waldo Emerson

Assessing Radio

In February Charlie Terry contacted my about my first blog. We swapped some e-mail messages. Charlie taught me the value of blogging in a way that I had not previously imagined.

So it was with some since of irony that I responded to a recent message from Charlie. He wanted to know my opinion of Radio and my opinion of the business value of blogging. I smiled.

It is no secret that I've had some struggles with Radio. It turns out that the majority of my Radio issues are user caused. (A.K.A my fault). And there are many (perhaps in the dozens) of features that I don't use. My only complaint about Radio is its complexity. Not anything a professional programmer would have much trouble with, but a bit too much for someone without advanced programming skills who holds down a full-time job.

My biggest complaint about Radio really isn't a complaint. I don't like the impersonal http://radio.weblogs.com/0117808 address. Pete helped me set up a jimstewart.org that can be used and diverts request to my radio site. That's cool, but not quite as good as pete.krukenberg.com/blog. So my advice to Charlie is to host his public site. Preferable if you have the time and ability.

Regarding the value of blogging. Web logs provide an important and valuable means of exchanging ideas. Certainly there are blogs I wish I'd never written. (Or at least not published.) But blogging has given me a greater set of friends, a broader set of ideas and a way to organize and express my thoughts. I recommend the process with all of its good and bad aspects.

Good luck Charlie. I hope this and my personal response is helpful. Be sure to spread the word. We need more bloggers..........
