Jim's Pond - Exploring the Universe of Ideas
"Beware when the great God lets loose a thinker on this planet. Then all things are at risk. It is as when a conflagration has broken out in a great city, and no man knows what is safe, or where it will end." --Ralph Waldo Emerson

Here & There - Seemingly Random Thoughts

My new telescope and the excitement surrounding Mars over the past few weeks has renewed my interest in astronomy. One of my favorite web sites is the The Astronomy Picture of the Day. A quick Google search of APOD will return the appropriate link as the number one hit. (Or you can follow my link given early in this paragraph.)

APOD provides a daily picture, usually related to current events, with an explanation written by an astronomer. There are often additional links to explore further.

Last week Bob, my son, asked me if "they" were ever going to prove that man had landed on the moon? He has been talking to his friends and there is some speculation that those moon landings never happened. It is all a hoax, according to some.

I spent a few minutes in the APOD Archives and found a site that maps out all of the Apollo landing sites with high resolution photos of the areas. A good imagination is still necessary. But there is a good explanation of why we can't see the landing modules through the Hubble telescope.

I hope you enjoy this resource as much as I have.

A minor annoyance.

Listening to the radio on Friday I heard a discussion along the lines of "How do you know that the information was good? Maybe it was just a blogger. No respect from the big boys for web logs. We are all a bunch of opinionated, uninformed bloggers. Oh, well.

For another perspective.......

At church today there was a 45 minute lesson encouraging the congregation to do more writing. Weird. I enjoyed the message and it got me thinking about blogging. Okay, it's a bit of a stretch, but there is certainly a case for doing more writing of any kind. Cool.

And finally,

Troy and Patrick, UEN Security Geeks, helped me set up a laptop with Red Hat last Friday. I'm looking forward to spending time with it tomorrow. It should be fun. And that may be the weirdest thing of all.........
