Wired Boomer
Did you catch this article in the Deseret Morning News. What caught my eye was the reference to "wired boomers" in the third paragraph. The article is about how our society is becoming more tech savvy.
Gen Xers are more likely to have a web site or weblog. The tech geezers (me, I suppose) are more likely to surf the web for our news. Hmmmmm.
I'm not sure about some of the conclusions. But I have been observing the changes in how we embrace technology. My daughter, married last April, has a cell phone, as does her husband. They have no intention of every having a land line. On the other hand, they don't have Internet access. That's what I'm good for, along with my washer and dryer.
It's interesting, because somehow wireline telephone and television are somehow connected. I'm not sure about that one. Anyway, here are some characteristics of the "tech elite", whatever that is:
They spend, on average, a total of $169 a month on broadband Internet service, satellite or cable TV, cell phones and Web content. That is 39 percent higher than the national average, $122.
Some 29 percent have broadband connections, compared with 17 percent of everyone else.
About 7 percent have canceled their land line telephone and gone all-wireless. (Among all Americans with cell phones, 21 percent have seriously considered canceling their land line phone service.)
About half of the young tech-savvy group said they'd rather have a cable company for their Internet provider than a phone company or independent service provider.
Despite being plugged in to the Internet and other sources of data more often, only 13 percent of the tech-savvy crowd feels overwhelmed by information. By contrast, a sense of information overload plagues 25 percent of the rest of the population.
My conclusion? Technology that is helpful gets used. The younger you are, the less resistant to the use of technology you likely will be, and, finally, even old guys use technology. Some of us even blog..........
