Jim's Pond - Exploring the Universe of Ideas
"Beware when the great God lets loose a thinker on this planet. Then all things are at risk. It is as when a conflagration has broken out in a great city, and no man knows what is safe, or where it will end." --Ralph Waldo Emerson

Thoughts on a Wired Geezer

Days off are great. Thanksgiving time is great.

I had lunch with my dad yesterday. We will do it again today. At his favorite little Mexican Restaurant. I could make a habit of this. We met for lunch at 2:00. He had work that needed to be done.

My Dad retired a while ago. His former boss and a businessman in his neighborhood are keeping him busy. He doesn't know the meaning of the word "retire". He has as much work as he can stand and then some. He is making good money, too. Why is he so popular? He's a wired geezer.

My Dad is 68 years old. He has stayed plugged into technology. He's the best on Microsoft Excel that I've ever seen. What he can do with financial reports is amazing. But he's more than an Excel expert.

He sells books on Ebay and makes some good money at it. He has a DVD burner in his computer, he is frequentlly surfing the Internet and he is always tinkering with new technology. There is always a PC on his work bench that is being reconditioned for one of his friends, or a neighbor, or one of my siblings.

I talked to him about this at lunch. I told him that it was cool that he's so tech savvy. He just smiled and shrugged. "There so much that I don't know", was his reply. Isn't that true for most of us?

Dad talked me into buying an Apple 2+ back when he first got one. He then talked me into upgrading to a 2E a couple of years later, and sold my 2+ to his boss. My first IBM compatible was purchased after seeing my Dad's new PC that came equipped with this new "hard drive".

I've introduced him to a few things along the way. He's converting his music collection to MP3. He loves my iPod, but hasn't made that jump yet. We share ideas and have fun exploring the new technology. And, just like any old dogs, we enjoy all the new tricks. He appreciates DVDs, CDs, MP3s and such because he lived through vinyl, reel-to-reel, cassette tapes and other changes.

I bought a VCR with remote because he called me, when I lived in Buffalo, and told me what to get. It's fun to hang with my techno-geezer Dad. He challenges me and keeps me entertained..........
