Jim's Pond - Exploring the Universe of Ideas
"Beware when the great God lets loose a thinker on this planet. Then all things are at risk. It is as when a conflagration has broken out in a great city, and no man knows what is safe, or where it will end." --Ralph Waldo Emerson

Calling Ducks

Six months ago I had no idea that such a thing as Duck Calling competitions even exist. Apparently Stuttgart, Arkansas is the national headquarters for just such a thing.

The community leaders of Stuttgart have organized a national Duck Calling contest, sanctioning local and regional qualifying events all around the United States. For the first time in Spring, 2003, Utah held a sanctioned qualifying event. The winner was Brent Cahoon. A local Davis County man who also happens to be my friend.

Brent is the manager of Wilde Arrow in Layton, Utah. He advised me last year in the purchase of a bow and has spent many hours helping me to perfect my archery skills. He also spends many hours every day practicing his call. I've become accustomed to the sounds of his duck call accenting the silence as I practice at the Wilde Arrow range.

Tonight I attended the 2004 Utah Duck Calling contest. For the second year Brent won. He will be representing Utah in the National contest next November. The win guarantees him a second trip to Arkansas. Until then Brent will continue to practice as often as possible. There is a little stream near the shop in Layton. Ducks line the stream and provide Brent with good feedback about how he is doing.

Yes, six months ago I didn't know. But tonight I spent a couple of hours learning more. And what struck me most is just how odd we humans can be. Is there nothing that can't be turned into a competition? Probably not.......
