The "Elite" Media
A couple of decades ago a VP at my then current job taught me a couple of valuable lessons. One, never label yourself. Two, don't give yourself an award. Good advice, then and now.
Self labels usually don't reflect reality. Self awards are just bad form. Puts a whole different slant on Award shows. Especially those celebrating themselves. I'd name names, but I don't have the time to identify everyone in the entertainment business. Let's just say that if modesty were measured in these groups you'd have to have a really sensitive scale.
I recently read an article about the role of the "elite" press. And this got me wondering. What qualifies them as elite? Perhaps you've had the experience of being part of a story that is newspaper or broadcast worthy. You are interviewed. It seems to go well. You think your answers were articulate, accurate and unambiguous.
The article is published. You read it. And can't recognize it. The writer got it all wrong. How did this happen?
I've had the experience often enough to know to avoid being interviewed or quoted for anything. Every time I get involved with the "elite" media things turn out badly. Is it this ability to foul things up that makes them elite? Or is it just a huge sense of self importance?
And perhaps it's just me. I'm fairly sensitive to the lack of respect paid to bloggers. We are just uniformed, opinionated, under-appreciate writers with no particular talent and a transparent bias, right? Or perhaps we've just stumbled into a bad neighborhood and the homies don't take kindly to strangers.......
