Jim's Pond - Exploring the Universe of Ideas
"Beware when the great God lets loose a thinker on this planet. Then all things are at risk. It is as when a conflagration has broken out in a great city, and no man knows what is safe, or where it will end." --Ralph Waldo Emerson

Thinking

Intelligence and thinking are two different things. At least according to Edward DeBono. And I agree. The way DeBono explains the difference is simple.

Intelligence is potential.

Thinking is the ability to create something useful from our raw intelligence.

Too many of us fail to draw this distinction. In other words, we fail to think.

It is the quality of our thinking that determines the quality of our work output.

Mike Vance diagrams the process this way:

S-P-R

Where S = Stimulus;

P = Pause

And R = Response

The pause (or thinking time) determines the quality of the response in this formula.

The quality of any organization is determined by the quality of P in the S-P-R model.........
