Jim's Pond - Exploring the Universe of Ideas
"Beware when the great God lets loose a thinker on this planet. Then all things are at risk. It is as when a conflagration has broken out in a great city, and no man knows what is safe, or where it will end." --Ralph Waldo Emerson

Good Enough for Me

I don't understand why we pave roads. The dirt type have worked for hundreds and in some cases, thousands of years. Improvements like gravel and oil help cut down on that mud thing. Better graders help to eliminate, or at lease reduce, the wash-boarding effect. Yes, as I see it, good old-fashioned dirt roads are the ticket. In fact, once you show people the benefits of dirt roads over narrow game trails, well the improvement is overwhelming.

And while I'm on the subject, we should eliminate sewage systems. The good old-fashioned outhouse should do. It was good enough for my great-grandfather and mother and it should be good enough to me. No sense in getting uppity or too full of myself, so to speak.

Hey, if those high-falutin' types with them fast cars want to drive above 45 MPH, let them build their own roads. Nope, I don't see any need to put a dime into highway infrastructure. That's for them rich folks.

And, boy, howdy, if them same types want to get rid of their sewage, I say, let them build there own canals. It's just a waste of good money. All they really need is a good shovel and a light-weight, well constructed out building. Sewage treatment plants are way over-rated.

Oh, and while I'm on the subject, no need for anything greater than 128K access to the network. Why would the average person need any more than that? Right?

On my way back from St. George this afternoon I was passing through Cedar City listening KSUB, 590 on my AM dial. (Remember when radios actually had dials? I do.) Well, there was this local Tech Talk show and the hosts where chatting with a local caller. All were congratulating each other on the fact that the UTOPIA fiber project had been derailed. A host commented that "there was no need for Ethernet to the home, once a user got double the speed of dial-up, that was good enough. Who would ever need any more?"

I may not be prophetic on this one. Heaven knows I'm not the brightest knife in the drawer! But one day I think arguments against Ethernet and fiber will sound just as dated as arguments against roads and sewers. What sets us apart from primal man? Well, the ability to band together as a society and invest together to do things that alone are impossible. That and good dentists, among other things...........
