Not left behind
I finally was able to get a Gmail account. It took a while, since my
cell phone must be the only one in the world not set up to accept text
messaging. And text messaging is the only way to get yourself on gmail.
My next step, aside from a couple of invitations that I needed to send
right away, was to set up the Gmail instance messaging. I was
disappointed to see that the client, available from Google, was a
windows exe. No Mac client anywhere in sight. Pete was giving me a
ration of grief at the last UEN Steering Committee meeting. I've been
using Proteus, an application that I believe Pete told me about, for
instant messaging. He informed me that I needed to get away from IM
that looks like a cartoon.
So today Pete finally let me know about Adium. What? I'm so behind. Not
to worry. Adium was a quick google search and download away. And in
about 5 minutes (I'm not kidding) I'd set up my Gmail IM and a couple
of other accounts and was going. In another 5 minutes I'd customized my
display name and icon for each of the accounts. Easy.
So, for now, I'm living in the modern world. I'm sure that, at some day
in the future, other cool software will be available and then, at some
later date, I'll find out that I'm behind again.........
