Excellent article from Clay Shirky from Lindon.

Haven't had a chance to fully digest it yet. But some interesting stuf from W.R. Bion "Experiences in Groups"! We are fundamentally individual and fundamentally social / Groups go from sex talk to vilification of an outside figure to religious veneration (but not necessarily in that order :O) ... hugely interesting!

Three things to accept apparently are:

  • You cannot completely separate technical and social issues
  • Members are different than users
  • The core group has rights that trump individual rights in some situations

Wow... am running off to the printer... not sure if I agree with this but it's food 4 thought!

A bit harsh.

OK, on reflection that sounds a bit harsh... people want privacy and learning can take place wonderfully well there. I dunno, it's just that I see the potential this stuff has and it's in it's openness and process and immediacy and realness... and I worry that if we just imitate what happens already, we're not harnassing that potential... there are different ways to learn, perhaps better, but the question which I hear the most is 'can we do what we do f2f online?' and the objection I hear most is 'this can't replace f2f' and my answers are often, 'no, of course not, it's not f2f' and 'it doesn't, it adds or operates as an alternative'.

Sigh... huge topic!
