Also sharing some interesting thoughts on student blogging in structured and unstructured ways... have to say I've had the same thoughts too and encountered plenty of similar protests 'If we could have a template then it's all be alright etc. etc.'

Learners need to understand why they might blog, they also need to want to... once you've got that sorted I reckon they can go nuts. It's more about the minset than the technology, setup - I forget this too often.

From Corante: Social Software a good post on why, in the same way as it was pointless arguing about the benefits and drawbacks of calculators, arguing about stuff like backchanelling is equally pointless... it's here, and it's not going to go away.

Reminds me of how people debate endlessly about how people should learn online and what will / won't be most effective practice... just look at what people use the technology for (and, perhaps, don't try to force them into using it in other ways, portals etc.)
