Wordpress and my aching head

Whoops... sorry about the earlier invite to play with wordpress... first people couldn't register (wrong file) now they can't login (have no idea why!). I'm going to carry on playing and scratching and we shall see... I AM going to get a playful model up soon though, I am I am.

Thanks Lindon for pointing it out :o)

On email:

"This is our problem.  We have applied to the Canadian Social Science and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) for support for IRRODL, through a program that funds the publication of scholarly journals.  This program accepts applications for funding support only once every three years, with the next round of competition closing June 30 2004.

Unfortunately, one of the criteria for funding is that IRRODL must have a minimum of 200 paid subscribers.

After strongly arguing IRRODL’s case that as an Open Access Journal, IRRODL is opposed to restricting our subscriber base to those who can afford subscriptions, we received a letter from SSHRCH refusing to allow us to apply for funding based on this one criteria.  The SSHRC funding council is simply not prepared to change their ruling at this time.

This decision was made despite the fact that IRRODL is listed in the Directory of Open Access Journals (http://www.doaj.org/ ) with 824 other open access journals from all disciplines, and that there is growing evidence that open access journals are read and cited as or more often than those that restrict access (see www.isinet.com/isihome/media/presentrep/acropdf/impact-oa-journals.pdf ).  Further, we argued that our 6,800 plus unpaid subscribers should be evidence of interest much greater than 200 paid ones.

We are reluctant to wait a further three years to apply for this support, by which time the case for Open Access will not doubt be self evident, even to established funding bodies.

We are responding to this ruling by launching an emergency appeal for paid subscribers.

We are requesting that at least 200 of our subscribers logon to http://www.irrodl.org/subscribe.htm and show your support by purchasing a “subscription” to IRRODL for $10.00 Canadian ($9.35 US).

In the spirit of an Open Access journal your subscription will NOT provide any additional services to those available to unpaid subscribers.  However, you will be demonstrating to SSRCH and other potential funders that you value IRRODL and support its decision to continue to provide free access to the journal and other publications including the recent Online Learning Book (see cde.athabascau.ca/online_book).

As this important funding deadline looms, your immediate help is needed.  Please subscribe to IRRODL, and show your support for open source publishing."
