You're right: "La Wally" is completely gorgeous. I am not an opera fan, per se, but there's another operatic piece of music that brought me to tears for the first couple-dozen times I heard it. It's on the "Passengers" soundtrack on which U2, Brian Eno contributed. The aria, peformed by Pavarotti on the track "Miss Sarajevo" makes my heart swell. - Kathleen Cahalan • 5/13/04; 10:39:51 AM
Yes, Pavarotti is wonderful on that song, in fact he makes the piece IMO. Ah, how about listening to a piece by Gavin Bryars, sometimes called "Tramp" and sometimes called "Jesus' Blood Never Failed Me Yet"? Have you heard that? There is an amazing version with Tom Waits. This piece is, to me, the deepest well of human emotion. I would say to anybody, if this doesn't make you weep, you haven't got any tears left...

Here is what critic Robert Christgau said about the piece.

Only a fraction of the songs in music labels' catalogs are available for download on legal music sites. Apple is leading the charge to get many out-of-print gems online and available for sale. By Katie Dean. [Wired News]
That's great news for the many artists whose work has been shelved and is no longer available in stores.
