Money for nothing and your chicks for free...

Rather than dumping money-by-the truckload in to the traditional media stream, look to place discounted, full page ads in the major dailies. Forget about throwing heat at your readers, toss them a softball. Get their attention and write copy with visual clues to a specific web page that gives readers a quick way to connect to your candidate's activities. Readers want to participate, they'll react to your ad. Create access and let them connect. Then, watch for emergence. It's all there for everyone to see.

A standby, full page, direct response ad in the Boston Globe can be placed for $9000. ~cj

Did he know he was doing this? Or, something else?

Snip from Dave's "Thoughts from Thursday Night Meeting": (emphasis mine)

I stated a thesis that Dean was drafted by the Internet. When I said this people said You mean Clark right? I said no, I mean Dean. Of course Dean was a declared candidate when the Internet wave washed over him, but he was an obscure candidate, with little chance, and was saying visionary things, things that resonate with people who love Internet communities. Did he know he was doing this? Of course not. He's not an Internet guy. He got lucky. Or this is the time to be a visionary, or soemthing else. The Politics God shined on Howard Dean and the money started coming in by the truckload.

Howard Dean's not an Internet guy. But, he doesn't need to be. He's got a campaign manager - Joe Trippi - who believes in the Internet *. Fundamental change requires trust among the players, and an early result of the Dean Trust was the emergence of Dean Nation. Money-by-the-truckload was another sweet emergence. It's clear to me that Dean trusts Trippi to capably respond to the unpredictable energies flowing out of Dean Nation et al. With an inspiring candidate, a motivated constituency, and an Internet-centric campaign infrastructure in place Howard Dean drives the new Democrat Party.
