Go USA! We're Number 24! We're Number 24! From a health perspective, I knew Americans were trailing every developed country. That's not news to me. However, today I learned that we trail almost all developed countries in reading, math, science and problem solving skills, according to a study by the OECD. We averaged twenty-fourth out of thirty countries surveyed. Leading the pack in almost every category was Finland, followed by Hong Kong and China in most cases. Canada beat us in every category by a long shot, and they're even crying over their results (eleventh place on average). But the important question is "Who did we beat??" We kicked the asses of...Tunisia, Brazil, Mexico, Thailand, Turkey and Greece. Yeah!! We're in the "embarassing lower-middle" with Spain, Poland, Russia and the Slovak Republic. Go USA! Go USA! In healthcare, we suck even worse, but that's for another day.
