How Will Liberals Win the Next Election?
How can the liberal factions win elections in America? This is a big question. I'm not specifically talking about the Democratic Party, but liberals in general. I personally would much prefer that the Democrats be overtaken by the Green Party or some other liberal party. But they can be part of it.
The question is "how can liberals prevail?" My friend Hong and I had an interesting discussion about this yesterday. He says the key is "education, education, education." Once a person has a reasonable education, they can tell when someone is trying to pull the wool over their eyes. Legions of poor, white, paranoid Americans turned out to vote for Bush in the last election. That is how he won.
He said that he related to them because of "moral values," which was a great ruse because his policies reflect ANYTHING BUT moral values, but if someone is uneducated enough they will believe what is told to them without questioning. Bush relied on this fact.
Think about it. If one candidate sends his message to the uneducated masses and one candidate tries to appeal to the educated, which one will win? If you say the second candidate, I want you to go out and drive on any Interstate highway and then come back and answer the question again. The vast majority of Americans are uneducated or poorly educated, as I've noted in a previous post. So any candidate who can relate to them on their level and convince them to turn out and vote will undoubtedly win. Bush did this expertly.
But once a person has been educated to even a small degree, they will be able to tell right from wrong, and be able to tell when they're being lied to.
Here's my suggestion. The Democratic Party, Green Party and other liberal organizations (ACT, MoveOn) put half of their money in the next four years into educating the public. Not into educating them about the candidates, the issues, etc. No. But educating them in what the American school should be teaching them - math, science, history, humanities. Educating adults who are of voting age. If they can get to even a few thousand people between now and 2008, there is a chance it will sway the election.
