Greetings, all!
After reading a few dozen blogs over the last couple months, I have finally decided to take the plunge. So far, so good.
The name? Round about 1994-95, I decided I wanted to be a professional web surfer and Net writer. I took it upon myself to chronicle online conversations (mostly via Usenet and mailing lists) and highlight them in a column for Milwaukee's alternative weekly, the Shepherd Express. I'd just read Neal Stephenson's Snow Crash and thought it was one of the great reads of my life. Much of the action takes place in the Metaverse, probably Stephenson's way of avoiding Gibson's term "cyberspace." So I had a name for my column. The column was somewhat short-lived (lasting roughly between two online obituaries: Richard Nixon and Jerry Garcia), but was fun while I did it. It now seems about right that I revive the idea, if not the exact subject. So here we are.
Like everyone elses, this blog will focus on my primary obsessions:
- Writing: I've been a professional writer for close to twenty years now, first with weeklies like the Shepherd Express, now mostly with technology mags. I've done (and still do) software documentation and a book on Computer Certifications for Arco Press.
- Working: I've been a trade unionist for most of my working life. You'll read about working people, their organizations, lives, and concerns past and present here.
- Tech: Doesn't everybody write about technology? I have been waiting for the Linux Desktop boom since I first installed Corel Linux in 1999. I'll be writing about that a lot too.
I hope you'll find much of interest. Let's have some fun, too.
