Quote of the week

I don't really want to make this another warblog, but I couldn't resist this one. The BBC scanned European newspapers this week before the Security Council vote on ending the sanctions on Iraq. Here's my favorite:

"By legalising the operation in Iraq, the UN will at the same time make another step towards legalising its own new role in international affairs - that of an auxiliary legitimising the actions of the only superpower in the world."

More from Jayson Blair

Guess I was wrong about us never hearing Jayson Blair's side of the story. He's been busy this week talking to the New York Observer (not a permalink, so check it out while you can!). Even more interesting than the interview (in which he says he was basically tired of being a journalist, so he tried to get himself fired) is this sidebar about his quest for a book deal (again, not a permalink). Prospects are limited, it would seem, but we may hear from Jayson when waiting is full.

Aaron McGruder's been kicking around this story in Boondocks this week. If you don't read Boondocks (or don't get it in your town), you really need to. It's way funnier than Mallard Fillmore, and the politics are better too!

Another important take on the whole affair, from another African-American former NYTimes staffer in the Berkeley Daily Planet.

Back in Action, aka All the great songs are about bad things

I recently learned that one of my favorite singers, Iris DeMent, got married last fall (to Greg Brown). While this is undoubtedly wonderful for them both, I worry. Iris writes and sings all these wonderfully sad and angry songs. Listening to any of her records (and I highly recommend them all, no associate's fee attached) never fails to make my wife Jeanette cry. But now she's gone got herself all happy, so what happens next? Guess we'll see.

Anyway, this is all by way of saying my main contract writing HIPAA policies and procedures for the Milwaukee Health Department ended yesterday. So I'm updating the resume and looking for another project (or even a job!). This means I can catch up on all the things I've been waiting to blog, and you'll probably have more interesting things to read.
