Walter Sisulu, co-founder of the modern African National Congress with Nelson Mandela and Oliver Tambo, died today. He was two weeks shy of his 91st birthday.
Not as well known as his comrades, Sisulu recruited Mandela to the ANC and joined him in prison in 1964. He chose not to take a post in the post-apartheid ANC government. He remains a towering figure in the fight for freedom. Mandela's statement appears here.
