I believe the head of Greensboro's inspections department owes County Commissioner Skip Alston an apology.
On Tuesday night, before the City Council no less, Butch Simmons opined the following about metal staircases in Alston-managed St. James Homes. The N&R quotes Simmons... "We don't believe it's safe...We think a fair amount of the units will have to be vacated."
But come to find out, Simmons was wrong on the extent of the problem. The stairs in question are not in "imminent danger" of collapse after all and his office may have alarmed residents unnecessarily.
I don't often agree with my Commissioner, but in this case I do agree that the inspections office was "irresponsible and reckless" in making such politically charged accusations without the facts to back it up.
