David Hoggard's take on local politics and life in general from Greensboro, NC

Friday, November 11, 2005

I just ran into mayor pro tem Yvonne Johnson in front of my house.  I congratulated her on her re-election Tuesday, then the discussion turned to whether or not the top at-large vote-getter, Sandra Anderson, was going to accept the pro-tem position.

Yvonne says that she and Anderson had spoken about leaving things as they are, but in the end, it was decided to stay with tradition and keep the at-large council member with the highest number of votes in the position.  So, as things currently stand, Sandra Anderson will indeed become Greensboro's next mayor pro tem.

I then ask Johnson how she felt about that and her answer was sincere and classy, "I'll nominate her... she will do a great job..."

We then spoke at length about her upcoming mayorial campaign.

Update 4:35p: Allen Johnson confirms... "...this could have been nasty, folks."  He's right.

According to information gleaned from last night's Summit Avenue Corridor Study presentation, property values in Greensboro's Aycock Neighborhood have risen 53% in the last decade - twice the rate of the rest of the city.  Wharton has details.

I wonder if other old , but not-yet-designated-as-historic, Greensboro neighborhood districts such as Glenwood, Westerwood, Sunset Hills and Ole' Asheboro Street are paying attention.
