David Hoggard's take on local politics and life in general from Greensboro, NC

Since I'm talking local football, let us not forget that Grimsley High School's team could very well go the distance this year.

For my far-flung family and friends, Jackson's team went 10-1 in the regular season, won the Metro 4-A title, and are seeded first in the 4-A West Division playoff bracket.  They won their first round playoff game against West Mecklenburg last Friday.  This Friday they face a strong Central Cabarrus team on Grimsley's home turf, upon which they are undefeated this year.

While Jack isn't getting nearly the amount of playing time as he would like, he is awful proud of being a valuable part of such an outstanding team.

As for me, I am just really proud of my eldest for sticking with the ongoing and daily 3-hour after school practices despite not being in the starting line-up as he is accustomed.  He's got big plans for next year however, and with the number of seniors the Whirlies will lose after this season, they are going to need his strong leadership ethic as they work to repeat this year's performance.

Go Whirlies.

Short of keeping up with Grimsley H.S.'s football coverage, I'm not much a customer for the N&R's sports pages.  But reporter Robert Bell and girl-magnet/photographer (inside joke) Jerry Wolford's series on Page High School's football season has me captivated.

I just don't normally attribute Bell's excellent and engaging narrative style to local sports writing, but I guess I'll have to pay more attention in the future.  In addition, as the series unfolds Wolford's photos are capturing the agony and the ecstasy both of Page's fall from grace as a perenial football powerhouse, and glimmers of their redemption under coach Bob Via.

Here's the whole series.  If you or some boy in your life ever played, wanted to play, or might play high school football in the future, follow along.  Tomorrow they cover the Grimsley/Page rivalry.
