A firebell in the night: On July 9, 2003, the Mormon temple in Samoa burned to the ground, as reported in the September 2003 Ensign (p. 74), which shows a striking photo of the temple in flames, as well as a photo of the Moroni spire towering over the charred remains of the structure. The lds.org site has more cool (but sad, of course) photos of the fire. The official LDS website later announced plans to rebuild the Samoa temple.

Sacrifice builds character: In his first address to BYU faculty, newly-installed BYU President Cecil O. Samuelson noted that the Board of Trustees is aware of the salary gap between BYU faculty and comparable institutions, and relayed their counsel that "an element of sacrifice continues to have importance as a component of the offering we make in our BYU service." http://www.harktheherald.com/article.php?sid=93306&mode=thread&order=0
