Millie Umschweis and Arnold Spitz

I can’t resist the Weddings/Celebrations pages in the Sunday NY Times. I’m especially drawn to the older couples, because it’s hopeful, and the gay and lesbian couples, because I think “good for them!” It’s damn hard to find a great loving relationship. I don’t understand how people who claim to be Godly can waste their energy trying to fight something that’s loving and good, where two people really want to commit to each other. Aren’t there better things to fight like poverty and injustice? I don’t get it.

Well, back to Millie and Arnold. They met 56 years ago but were unable to be together then. Each married other people and had not seen each other over the years. Now he is 89 and she is 73 and they just got married. Says Millie:

"We may have only a couple of years left together, but Arnold taught me that you have to live each day. As my mother, who is 95, said, 'You're never too old to love. And the heart pounds the same at 17 as it does at 73.'"

Stakes in the ground

Yesterday my housemate came into my townhouse and said, “There are guys out there putting stakes in the ground!” She moved here in August from NYC and is originally from Phoenix. I had to explain to her that the stakes, which stick up 3 1/2 feet from the ground, are to help the snowplow drivers find the edges of the roads and driveways when the snow comes this winter. I think I freaked her out.

Typical snowfall in Worcester County over the winter is 70 inches (compared to 40 inches in Boston). The year before last we got about 20 inches all winter. Last winter we had over 100 inches! We'll see what happens this year...
