Dogs shocked in Boston

Boston City Council had NStar officials in to testify yesterday on several recent incidents where dogs and pedestrians have been electrically shocked on city streets:

The exchanges between city and utility officials were preceded by often wrenching tales told by dog owners, some of whose pets were killed or injured by electrical current on Boston streets. Some of the dogs attended as well, including Crumb, a Hungarian Viszla who was shocked last week on a Chinatown street. At one point, the 15-month-old dog put its front paws on a concrete divider, standing directly behind three NStar executives as they testified.

Rubber dog boots have been flying off the shelves, understandably.

Photo: Crumb, a Hungarian Viszla, was on hand for yesterday's hearing; his co-owner testified that a shock in Chinatown has changed the dog's disposition. (Globe Staff Photo / Bill Greene) By the way, I love this photo. It's like the dog knows exactly what's going on and wants to be sure the people in court know what happened to him.

Domestic bliss

Ernesto at Never Neutral describes an “ink polaroid" scene:

…This photograph is taken from the top of the room. You see them, in bed, hugging each other. It's dark so they could be ink spots in a Rorschach test, but if you look at the picture more closely, you will realize they resemble jigsaw puzzle pieces, the way they fit to each other… You can't see it in the picture, but he is saying "you are so far away." You can see the movement in the picture, though: she is getting closer.

It's night. It could also be early morning. They fit.

By the way, it’s better in its entirety. I love the way he captures a moment in time so simply and evocatively, not a wasted word. Kurt at The Coffee Sutras captured a similar scene, even more sparely:

Morning verses

I go to sleep with
my hand touching yours--
palm resting on slender fingers--

why only hands?

---

Well, I don’t want to spoil the romantic mood, but Ernesto’s scene kinda reminded me of one of my favorite recent photos (con disculpas a Ernesto) at Daily Oliver! Dogs sure are like us in many ways. I suppose that’s how they worked their way into our domestic lives. Also posting scenes of domestic bliss, with and without the dog, is Tonya - a surprising number of them for a so-called Adventure Journalist! But then, who says that the everyday, quotidian stuff of our lives can’t be an adventure? (See previous posts here on examining our ordinary lives.)
