Which 20th century poet are you?

Via Tonio (aka Gertrude Stein):

You are Sharon Olds, master of the everyday,
explorer of the female body and family.

Apparently I am also:

You are Lawrence Ferlinghetti! Modern rebel and
owner and proprietor of the City Lights
Bookstore in San Francisco, Lawrence
Ferlinghetti is known for his playful tone and
innovative style. He is MY favorite poet, and
the works of lawrence are always eye-opening
socio-cultural critiques in a light-hearted
tone. He is recognized as one of the most
influential poets of the beat era.

Mate y amigas

Maddy y Sandra (arriba); yo y Sandra (abajo).

I brought most of the brownies to Sandra’s this morning to have with our mate. I also brought my copy of Yerba Buena's “President Alien” which they both really liked. I bought it months ago and forgot all about until I saw an article about them in the Globe (they played in town, but I missed them). The band is based in New York and “draws upon salsa, Cuban son, jazz, Latin rock, hip-hop, Afro-beat, and club culture to skillfully weave its hip, sexy and infectious dance floor grooves” (from Amazon). The album was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Latin Rock/ Alternative Album. And they have a very cool website.

Fyi, yerba mate and yerba buena are two entirely different things.

Food and love

I didn’t get to see “Monsieur Ibrahim” yesterday because my friend had to bail on me. But last night the Sundance channel was running “Mostly Martha,” which was on my list to see. I enjoyed it very much – food and love, love and food. My kinda movie. (My kinda life. Damn, I need to marry an Italian!)

It was interesting also to see how sometimes family finds you. Martha, an elite chef, has everything tightly under wraps when two things happen to change everything: her sister dies and she suddenly has to care for her young niece and the restaurant owner adds a boisterous Italian chef to the kitchen. I suppose it’s a bit predictable what will happen, but I still found the way Martha slowly softens and lets these two into her life heartwarming.
