Feeding the blog

Six months ago tomorrow I started this weblog with no idea what I was going to end up doing with it. At first, I struggled to figure out what to write about, where to focus, how much of my personal life I wanted to include, etc. I still don't know what the focus of this beast is. But I don't worry anymore because this insatiable beastie is omnivorous and gladly consumes whatever I feed it, albeit with occasional heartburn later on.

I only realized this six months' milestone after visiting Rebecca's Pocket this morning. She's the author of the The Weblog Handbook, which was a great guide when I started out. One of her readers wrote in asking for advice on writing and thinking, and she posted some of her response. I particularly liked the last bit. It works for all kinds of writing, but particularly blog and journal writing:

• Pay attention. Notice little things. Ask yourself how you feel. Ask yourself how he feels. Note the color. Pay attention to the language, yours and hers. Watch the interaction. Estimate the size. Listen. Listen harder.
