Single women could elect the next president

Today's Talk of the Nation program on NPR is about single women voters. Democrats are targeting single women as this election's "soccer mom" or "Nascar dad" - a huge block of disaffected voters. According to Democratic pollster Stan Greenberg, who was on the program:

65 percent of the single women surveyed -- a diverse group that crossed class, regional, ethnic and racial lines -- said the country is headed in the wrong direction. (quote from commondreams.org)

In the last election, only 52% of single women voters cast a vote. Spread the word: Single women could elect the next president.

In the news...

Some good (well maybe depressing or infuriating are better words) reading on Iraq, or what The Daily Show has long been calling "Mess O-Potamia" (now Giant Mess O-Potamia):

Thomas Friedman in the NY Times asks: “Do we have any chance of succeeding at regime change in Iraq without regime change here at home?

Fred Kaplan at Slate (via TPM): “The White House is about to get hit by the biggest tsunami since the Iran-Contra affair, maybe since Watergate.”

Sy Hersh in The New Yorker on Rumsfeld’s secret operation of interrogating prisoners, which has “embittered the American intelligence community, damaged the effectiveness of élite combat units, and hurt America’s prospects in the war on terror.”

But there's cheerful news here in Massachusetts (not for conservatives, of course) as gay and lesbian couples lined up to get married yesterday, many with their kids in tow. They seem so thrilled to be getting married and so happy about the idea of blessing their unions in marriage that you gotta wonder how the dour folks protesting this as "the end of the sacred institution of marriage" can say that with a straight face (so to speak). The Globe quotes one small-town clerk who officiated yesterday: "The couples that have come in have been cute... They're so excited about it. I had no idea what to expect." And another: "They're just as happy as everyone else that comes in."

Public service announcement

StarIQ has a forecast for the “month” – that being from New Moon today to New Moon next month:

The transit of Venus over the Sun and the Venus-Pluto opposition at the time of the Full Moon make this an intense month for relationships. While it's natural to want to avoid unpleasantness, the willingness to address unresolved issues is essential now. Hiding from uncomfortable truths only amplifies their negative effects. The Mars-Saturn conjunction in Cancer requires courage in the face of primal fears. The lesson is that security is not necessarily about holding onto the past, but in making a new path for the future.
