Senate Campaign News 20040716

The daily afternoon thunderstorm took out my internet connection yesterday, but there wasn't any news of note anyway. There is some today, however.

At a forum of Senate candidates in Tallahassee, Alex Penelas staked out a position to the left of his opponents with regards to Iraq. He said that the war was unjustifiable and that it is time to bring our troops home. Betty Castor said that she didn't think it would be practical to bring troops home anytime soon. Peter Deutsch endorsed a multi-lateral approach and made the (rather odd) statement that Nato had asked to help and that President Bush rejected the offfer. Tallahassee Democrat article AP article.

The St. Petersburg Times has an article about Mel Martinez' membership in an exclusive country club criticized for discriminating against blacks and Jews. Must be a slow news day as Martinez left that club in 1998 and his brother who is a member of a club states that discrimination at the club is a thing of the past.

The Orlando Sentinel writes about the founder of the pro-life group Operation Rescue joining Larry Klayman on the campaign trail in Orlando on Thursday.

Peter Deutsch's campaign sent an e-mail to his supporters announcing the bill he introduced to Congress that seeks to lift the ban on stem cell research. H.R.4812, the Stem Cell Discovery Through Diversity Act, is currently in the House Committee on Energy and Commerce. The e-mail aks recipients to "take this opportunity today to tell the president to stop his obstructionist tactics and allow scientists to do their critical work. and sign a petition urging President Bush to support the bill.

LATER: Castor is quoted in the Tallahassee Democrat article thusly, "We need to make sure that we never allow a pre-emptive strike again, which was the policy of the Bush administration". I wonder what she thinks of this: Kerry Backs Much of Pre-Emption Doctrine,
