Senate Campaign News 20040728

Television ads and the 2000 election were the dominant topics today in the newspaper articles pertaining to the Senate races.
As posted ysterday, Mel Martinez released a statewide ad, which shows him with the President. The Orlando Sentinel and Tampa Tribune both wrote about the complaints that the Doug Gallagher campaign has about the ad. They believe that it violates a provision of McCain-Feingold and also point out that it implies that President Bush has endorsed Martinez, when he has officially maintained neutrality in the race.

The articles also mention the ad released by the Peter Deutsch campaign that shows his plan for universal health care. That ad is not posted online yet, but when it is, I'll provide the usual links and text.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As mentioned in an earlier post, Peter Deutsch joined Representatives Corrine Brown and Alcee Hastings in introducing HR 4867, a bill that would allow a single representative to object to the certification of a state's electoral votes.

Michael Moore has apparently heard about this. According to the St Pete Times,

Moore called Deutsch "the man of courage who's on the ballot and is going to stand up for all the people of Florida".

The Gainseville Sun says

Moore also praised U.S. Rep. Peter Deutsch, a Democrat from Pembroke Pines, for his efforts in exposing problems with Florida’s voting process. He insisted he wasn’t endorsing Deutsch, who is running for the U.S. Senate in the Aug. 31, primary, but he said: ‘‘I think my words speak loud and clear about how I feel about Congressman Deutsch.’’

This morning he apparently had a press availability session with Deutsch and Brown. That'll undoubtedly be in the papers tomorrow.

LATER:  The Gallagher campaign had a pretty fiery press release about the Martinez ad.
