In my adopted home town of Friday Harbor, there was a big event on Thursday. A historic house that was too nice to destroy but not practical enough to sit in the commercial section of town got spared the wrecking ball and moved to the other end of town. In a town of 2000 people, this is a major spectacle, and lots of people turned out to watch it. On of the local papers captured the action.

Another gorgeous day, where I had free time and a camera. Today I walked along the Seattle waterfront. I found a really cool, stylistic statue of Chritsopher Columbus, and I took a bunch of pictures from multiple angles, exploring light, reflection, background, etc. The best are uploaded to Flickr, along with some other random shots.

Today is Charles Darwin's birthday. He would have been 197 today. He is best known, of course, for writing The Origin of Species, first published in 1859. Without the benefit of electron microscopes, Darwin essentially through deductive reasoning reverse-engineered DNA -- decades before Crick and Watson actually documented its existence. Now, Darwin got some things wrong; he thought that evolution came from "random mutations." While random mutations certainly do happen, we now know that far more diversity is generated by sexual reproduction than by random mutations. The exception, of course, is asexual life forms and viruses, which can and do mutate quite rapidly. But the brilliance and insight he brought to the application of the scientific method to understanding the diversity of life on our planet it simply astounding, especially considering that he did it in the early 19th century with almost no tools to assist him.

Happy birthday, Chuck. It's nice to see that you're still giving creationists fits long after your passing.
