Charlie over at Siemens asks What's killing our symposiums?
It seems that the 2nd International TUV Rheinland Safety Sumposium USA was cancelled. It had been scheduled for April 24-25 in Galveston, Texas. He wonders if the problem is 1) promotion, 2) location or 3) timing.
I'd guess that promotion was a big problem. I heard about it only a week ago through Invensys (see this post). Never a word through Charlie or anyone else involved. And I'd think that enough people read me that it would make sense to get me on board. If I had not subscribed to the Siemens blog, then I wouldn't have known that it was over.
But people just don't come to symposiums on a whim. Especially something new. It takes a lot of work to bring people. Several email requests and some publicity and the active solicitation of customers by suppliers bring new people. You have to show them that there's something worthwhile in it for them. You can't just say "we're going to talk about safety" and hope to get 100-200 people. Now, I don't know what this group did, but if they want a little free PR advice, I'm willing to help non-commercial, standards causes. I believe in them.
That's my initial thoughts. Anyone out there know about this symposium? Care to share some thoughts? Hit the comment button or send me an email.
