Not Monterey Jack, But Monterey, California[posted by Troy] Unfortunatley, Kim & I have to go to California (Monterey) for a few days. Thus, the blog will be on hold until we return. Check back in the middle of next week, and we'll have more fun-filled posts to waste your hours. In the mean time, here's a story about how beer saved mankind. Enjoy!------------------- "In ancient Egyptian mythology, Ra, king of the gods, sent his daughter, the goddess Hathor, to punish mankind--"the children of his tears"--for their evil deeds. Hathor descended to earth and raged through villages and towns, killing every man, woman, and child she encountered. The earth ran with blood. Eventually, Ra took pity on his children and tried to calm Hathor's fury. But she had found the taste of blood too sweet. So Ra devised a plan: "I will protect mankind from her." He ordered all his slave girls to brew seven thousand jars of beer overnight. "Bring hither the beer," he commanded before the next day dawned. He tasted the brew. "How good that is," he said. "With this sleeping potion, I will protect mankind from her." Ra had red ocher dye mixed with the beer to make it look like blood. Then he ordered that the jugs be poured out, so the beer overflowed the fields. At dawn, Hathor came down to earth. She was intent on slaughtering the few who were left alive. When the goddess saw the ocher-colored beer she lapped it up, thinking it was blood. Soon she became very happy and forgot her errand. With unsteady legs, Hathor made her way back to Ra's palace. There she slept for several days. "Welcome, gentle Hathor," said Ra. "Mankind shall remember their escape from your fury by drinking strong beer at all your festivals." Thus beer saved mankind from destruction." From "Friend and Foe - The Middle Eastern Origins of Beer." by Rachel Hajar, published in, World and I, Nov 2001 v16 i11 p206.
