It's that time of year [posted by Troy] Time to start buying in honor of the holiday season. I wonder, if we could zap someone from the past, say 1877, to the present, say 2004, would they be shocked at the way we "vote" with money, the way that TV is full of advertising, the thought of name brands, our parades that are just long advertisements? Would our consumer existence surprise that person? I wonder?

Green River vs. Joliet [posted by Troy] One of the many, many, many interesting debates that my family had over Thanksgiving was a debate about the history of Dairy Queen. The claim was made that the first DQ was near East Moline, in Green River. Well, if you read the history page of DQ, you will see that the first DQ was in Joliet, BUT, Green River did play a role in the history of this frozen-treat paradise.
