History [from In These Times] As a former history major, I view history as the things we choose to tell ourselves about the past. Their is not a single History (big H), but a mulitude of histories (many little h's). It is just a practical matter that we can't tell everything, so we use our current understanding of the present to evaluate evidence from the past to tell our story. Good historians use a range of resources and documents to present balanced views. By its very nature, history is a reductionist product, that is, it leaves out many elements to tell simple truths. One common truth is that the evil racist South caused the Civil War, which was a battle over slavery. This may be one of the most major over simplifications. For instance, most of us have little knowledge of the Norther Slave trade, which is discussed in this In These Times article. The truth is that race relations practiced in North and South were hardly admirable throughout American history. But, I'm still glad that the North won.

Fired for religion...by a College! [posted by ZelderBar] Checkout this Sun Times article that details good old Wheaton College's dismisal of a faculty member for converting to Catholicism. Remember, religious freedom is a Constitutional Right, but private schools can discriminate. The question that has to be asked is about the idea of openess and understanding of the differences of others. It seems that Wheaton can't handle the difference between Catholics and Protestants. How will their students handle ALL of the other religions in the world?
