$$$$ [posted by Troy] The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that pay fell behind cost of stuff. This could be good, because pay may now catch up. This could be bad because it may not catch up. Here's a quote from the Charlotte Observer:Pay hikes fell further behind inflation in the fourth quarter, with weekly wages rising an average of 1.9 percent while the Consumer Price Index jumped 3.8 percent. Median weekly earnings for the full-time workers hit $659, compared with $647 a year earlier, the Bureau of Labor Statistics said Thursday. "It's not unusual that prices move up before wages," said Mike Wald, a BLS economist. "The question now is whether wages will catch up in 2006."

Everybody Needs Somebody [posted by Troy] It is sad that Wilson Pickett has died at the age of 64. I probably first heard of Wilson Pickett from the original Blues Brother movie, since their version of Everybody Needs Somebody is taken from Wilson Pickett's version (even though I don't think he wrote the song).

Google Google [potsed by Troy] There is a new podcast called InfoSpeak. It's from the University of Washington's Information School (a library science school). The first podcast is about Google and the future of search technology. It is pretty good, and the best part is that you can download the audio file for free without using iTunes or an iPod, so anyone can listen. It is short and worth listening to. Here's a bit about the show:Now that we have computers that work o.k. most of the time, access to the World Wide Web, and "good enough" global searching, perhaps we can look at the year 2006 as the end of the first phase of the Internet Age. Our expansive dreams of instant information access are finally starting to come true. Advanced search technology is now taken for granted, seen as an essential tool to make life easier, and the name of that tool is Google. In this exclusive interview for InfoSpeak, Professor Janes points out how we all want to be heard; internet search (and for that matter, this podcast) reflects this fact perfectly. The question now, as he says, is how are we going to be found?
