Storage: 40 and 80GB iVDR media. iVDR is another storage format unlikely to get outside of Japan, which reminds me of Iomega's Jaz series. But the capacities are much better -- we go up to 80GB this time. Though there are three possible sizes of iVDR, these discs are 80 x 110 x 12.7mm, or about 3" wide and 4.3" tall. [TechJapan]

Semantic Web Ontologies: What Works and What Doesn't. Peter Norvig: (Mr. Norvig is director of search quality at Google.) [There are] four individual challenges. First is a chicken-and-egg problem: How do we build this information, because what's the point of building the tools unless you got the information, and what's the point of putting the information in there unless you have tools. A friend of mine just asked can I send him all the... [AlwaysOn Network]

MSN Search supports RSS. This is very cool, and it's a differentiator for their search service because Google doesn't do it, nor does Yahoo, Jeeves, etc. It's also nice because they listened to us at the design review meeting late last year in Redmond. It was nearly unanimous among the bloggers that RSS support should be part of the search engine, both on the sending and receiving sides. Now one half has been taken care of. I'm sure this feature will gain wide use among bloggers. Very good. [Scripting News]

Mac Mini: Prior Art

prior_macmini.jpg imageYou know what they say about Apple: they do what's already been done, but better. Using the LED Arbiter, though, it's clear the original bests the usurper. (Thanks, adampsyche!)

N-Gage Retired from Sales Chart

ngage_chart.jpg imageBrother in armchairs Kotaku has posted news that the Nokia N-Gage, once slo-motion softball to snarky gadget writers everywhere, has finally dropped off the charts, as the Entertainment & Leisure Software Publishers Association (EeLPAin) delisted the cell phone/gaming console hybrid from its sales measurements. No commentary necessary¡Xeven Nokia knows what they screwed up on this one.

Sony Ericsson S710a: Reviewed Like a Winner

sony_s710amm.jpg imageFirst things first: how do you get a name as cool as Sony Ericsson President's Urban Gillstrom, short of starring in your own 2D Japanese fighting game? All I've got is this alliterative one that makes me sound like heading up the male cheer squad. Anyway, Sony Ericsson prez isn't the only bit of cool coming out of the phone manufacturer, according to Matt Maier (aka GigaOm Mini). He grabbed a S710a right out of SE's booth at CES and has been playing with it for several days and is just beaming. It's not just the feature set, either (although the S710a is no slouch), but the fabled 'integration' of all the features. Sony Ericsson's been sort of aimless for a while¡Xmaybe this will be their next T610.

Bernina Artista 200e

bernina_200e.jpg imageI thought that sewing machine that could embroider JPGs was cool¡XI had no idea there was a sewing machine out there that had Windows installed on it. The Bernina Artista 200E does much of the same sort of automatic embroidery business that the Brother Innov-is 4000D does, except when the OS crashes, you can sew the patches yourself. Of course, you could always just install them with the built-in CD-ROM drive, too, but I don't know how well cotton holds up to lasers. (Thanks, Peter!)

LG Gaming Phone Slightly Less Weird

lg_gamingphone.jpg imageQuite a few of you have written in to tell me that LG's weird 3d gaming phone isn't so weird after all, since it actually opens up to be used like a proper handheld console. That makes a lot more sense. I hereby rescind 'weird' to replace it with 'ugly.' Okay, actually it's not all that ugly, but I don't like the look of the D-Pad.

Stop Sketching, Little Girl -- Those Paintings Are Copyrighted!. Imagine being a little girl and being rousted by museum security guards because the image you are sketching is copyright. Sure, the museum relented - but when little girls even need to worry about such things, our social consensus has become dark and twisted.
