Escaping to South America The cold is relentless. It's about -40 this morning. The woodstove, gas fire place and oil monitor are all going full blast and I'm still shivering. I'm consoling myself by doing some research online for the trip to Argentina that Iris and I are planning to take during March Break.
In spite of the cold weather, about 20 people gathered at our house last night for Jamie's 'meal'. We invited people who'd been special in his life to come and share some food with us, and we asked that they be there for him as he goes through the teenage years. Joe played him a special piece on the bagpipes, people told funny 'Jamie' stories (most of which I hadn't heard before: I was shocked at the antics my youngest has gotten up to in his short life) and then we sent everyone home with a thank you gift.
It was a bit of work, but I'm glad we did it. We did the same for Alan, and we should have for Iris, but she made a great scene every time we talked about having such a meal for her: she absolutely refused to be a part of anything so 'embarassing'. Jamie, however, seemed to really enjoy himself. He's quite comfortable among people no matter what their age and he had everyone laughing with stories of his own.
For the record, here is last night's menu:
chicken wings spicy shrimp dip with crackers
roast caribou/gravy wild sheep stew baked salmon roasted vegetables: carrots, parsnips, yams, turnip and onions mashed potatoes ceasar salad
cheese cake with cloudberry topping wild cranberry crisp
