Parenting Skills Through Ballet
I found this photo posted on the bulletin board at the dance studio. It's not one I'd seen before and it made me smile. Iris is on the far left. At the age of four, it was her very first Nutcracker performance: that year she was a snowflake (as seen here), a mouse and a rabbit.
It reminded me of the fact that she has danced just about every single role in that ballet: she's been a Harlequin doll, a caribou (in the early days they used to do a northern version of the Nutcracker: that explains the caribou and rabbit roles, which of course you won't see in the original Nutcracker), she's danced the Spanish, Chinese and Arabian parts, she's been in the Reed Flutes, both a small and large snowflake, Waltz of the Flowers, a rat, the Rat Queen, the Prince and this year, Clara.
It's rare that anyone gets to place themselves in multiple roles like that. I don't doubt that it will help prepare her for parenthood!
