hs-CRP: "Deja-vu, all over again!"
U.S. Studies Point to Protein Role in Heart Attacks
Cholesterol Not Lone Factor in Heart Health
Protein Is Factor in Heart Disease, Researchers Say
I had to smile when I saw that the press had picked up on these studies that here reported in this week's New England Journal Of Medicine, that highly respected purveyor of the very latest in Conventional Medical Wisdom. While the NEJM presented these studies in a fairly sober and factual manner (with a "straight face" one might say) the press has seen fit to spin them, trumpeting them as the latest in life-saving, cutting edge medical research and further added a spin to promote yet another use for those toxic offerings of Big Pharmacy, the statin class of drugs.
(Interestingly, the NEJM published similar findings, from a different study, in 2000 but this received little attention from the mainstream media - possibly because statins were not involved.)
Now, it isn't this new promotion of statins that made me smile - oh, no! What made me smile is that 'way back in 1998, then again in 2001 and yet once more on April 30, 2004 (Heart Attack and Stroke: What are Your Real Risks?) Dr. Myatt published a HealthBeat Newsletter in which she told of the relationship between C-Reactive Protein and cardiovascular disease, and advised her Wellness Club Members and patients to be sure to have the blood test hs-C-RP added to their panels. (The hs stands for either "high speed" or "highly sensitive" depending on the lab. It really is both.) This was such a novelty at the time that many labs and most Conventional Medical doctors knew nothing of it. Dr. Myatt persevered though, writing labwork orders for those patients whose conventional doctors balked, and in the process probably saved a goodly number of lives by catching heart disease early and correcting it. For years, Dr. Myatt was "odd man (woman) out", constantly having to educate other medical practitioners about the test and what the results meant. Now, the prestigious New England Journal Of Medicine has taken up the cause - hallelujah! - more lives will be saved as this once "radical" test becomes a tool of mainstream medicine.
In that same newsletter Dr. Myatt also detailed some natural, holistic strategies for both cholesterol control and for the reduction of the inflammation demonstrated by the presence of C-Reactive Protein.
So, before you succumb to the temptation to sprinkle statin drugs on your breakfast cornflakes, please, please do yourself a favor and have a look at the advice that Dr. Myatt presented in her April 30, 2004 Heart Attack and Stroke: What are Your Real Risks? HealthBeat Newsletter. Better yet, why not visit us at www.DrMyattsWellnessClub.com where you can find a wealth of real "cutting edge" health information. You can also subscribe to receive the HealthBeat Newsletter while you are there - it's free!
Cheers, Nurse Mark
