To avoid the traffic jams due to the rain in Shanghai today, I took the subway from Xujiahui to Pudong. On the way back, when changing trains at Renmin Square, I noted that all people were counted. Also a TV crew was filming. I asked a colleague what was going on, and she told me that all people are counted to make sure that not too many people enter the station at one time. If too many people are in the station, it will be closed for a couple of minutes. An interesting system, but it means that also transportation times by subway will be unpredictable. If the stations closes for 10 minutes there will be a huge crowd that will fight to get in, so the station will be closed again. Not sure if this can really work, but I suppose people have thought about it. Maybe I should watch the local evening news tonight and see what they say.
