Warner Home Video will start selling original DVDs in China for 22 yuan
(about 2 EUR). Currently fake DVDs cost about 8 yuan in DVD shops in
China. It will be interesting to see if this will work: if it does it
shows that Chinese are willing to pay more for better quality. I
personally doubt it, the market is not mature enough yet. Beijing has a
few good DVD shops, where all DVDs are sold in boxes and where they are
ordered alphabticall. You can preview the quality of the movie and
bring them back if there is something wrong. You even get a (fake)
receipt. But DVDs cost 10 yuan here (instead of 8). I love this kind of
stores, because they have a huge stock and you don[base ']t have to go through
boxes of DVD[base ']s to find the right ones. But what kind of people come
here? Mainly foreigners. Chinese are not yet willing to pay a little
extra. I actually expect that pirates will copy the Warner DVD boxes
and start selling fake DVDs in them.
