I love to eat pizza every now and then, and I am always looking for good places to eat a decent pizza in China. In Beijing I have an all time favourite, Peter Pan. They have several locations now, but the original (?) one next to the SOS clinic close to Sanlitun is still the best. In Shanghai there are several places that I go to, but none if them is really good. Either the atmosphere is not nice, the waiters are arrogant or slow, or the food is just not up to standard.

However, I now may have found a truly good place for Italian food: Casanova on Julu Lu. I went here on Saturday night around 9 PM, and as I did not make a reservation was lucky to get a table for two. The location is right next to the sleazy bars that Julu Lu is infamous for, in an old villa (at least that[base ']s what it looks like). On the 1st floor there is a lounge bar, with Buddha Bar / Café del Mar type music and very relaxed couches and seats. The restaurant is on the second floor, and looks like restaurant that really could be found in Italy. It is a bit upscale, and cannot be compared to Peter Pan in Beijing. It[base ']s not really a pizzeria, but they also have pizza on the menu. The staff was excellent, although I did not like that they immediately try to sell you a whole bottle of wine when you order wines by the glass. And the food was amazing. I had a foie gras as a starter, that was very good (I love foie gras, and always order it when it[base ']s on the menu). As the main course I ordered a pizza Casanova that was just excellent. A great taste, and very nice toppings (among others fresh salmon and caviar). Probably one of the very best I ever had. The price was also quite OK. For two people including two glasses of wine per person and coffee about 700-800 RMB, not cheap but in my opinion absolutely worth it. Anybody looking for a great Italian restaurant in Shanghai I will advise to try this place out. I am sure I will come back here very often!
