Book Reviews from participants in the Pollinate Your Mind Summer Reading Club

Free Fall by Fern Michaels: The Sisterhood is about to avenge Yoko Akias' mother. A movie star destroyed her life and now the daughter is left to make things right. The ladies "crazy glued" the movie star and cohorts to the floor and called the authorities. Later the ladies leave for a mountain top in Barcelona, Spain to recoup.

Hide and Seek by Fern Michaels: Mitch Riley, a ruthless director of the FBI puts problems in front of the Sisterhood. As usual, the ladies of the vigilantes outwit him and bring him down. His mistreated wife and daughter finally have the upper hand.

Hokus Pokus by Fern Michaels: The Sisterhood ladies develop their talents to form the G-String Band, a hilarious performance is performed to great applause. The vigilantes again foil the big government crooks and leave for Big Pine Mountain--a hideaway in a secluded spot.

The Jury by Fern Michaels: The Sisterhood is back! A high profile Washington powerbroker is going to be paid back. His wife Paula has been beaten and her self esteem his been shattered. the Sisterhood breaks his legs and does much more damage to him. The Senator's wife, Julia, dies of AIDS.

Lethal Justice by Fern Michaels: The Sisterhood goes after Roland Sullivan and Arden Gillespie for making Alexis spend a year in prison. They preyed on the elderly by taking their life savings. Legal system has failed Alexis but the Sisterhood won't. They have Roland and Arden knocked out and battered their faces.

Payback by Fern Michaels: The Sisterhood has planned extra vengeance for a US Senator who has ruined his wife's, Julia, life giving her a social disease. He is kidnapped and sent to Africa, hypnotized and has to work on a farm for 25 cents a week.

Sweet Revenge by Fern Michaels: Myra Rutledge and the Sisterhood of seven women are helping a friend Isabelle that has been framed in a drunk driving incident. The perpetrator Rosemary steals her fiancé and architecture drawings of Isabelle. Revenge is swift and well deserved.

Vendetta by Fern Michaels: Myra Rutledge's time has come for revenge against John Chai, the man who had killed her pregnant daughter. The seven women who make up the Sisterhood have empowered themselves to help Myra avenge her daughter. The means that they take are quite gruesome.

Weekend Warriors by Fern Michaels: A very interesting concept. Myra Rutledge is having lunch with her daughter Barb and friend Nic. Barb crosses a street previous to the lunch and is hit and killed by a speeding car. The driver has diplomatic immunity so is not punished. This event starts the story and the involvement of several people.

Slip of the Knife by Denise Mina: A break from the ordinary reading. Difficult at times to deceiver British slang and humor. The story drags more often than not, a lot of words/writing for a short story.

Baby Brother by 50 Cent and Noire: This book in my opinion was an urban teen book. Noire does better writing alone, and I think this book but I feel it is for a much younger person than myself.

Candy Licker by Noire: This book was an erotic page turner for me and I couldn't put it down until I finished reading every word.

Books and Reading

  • National Novel Writing Month "National Novel Writing Month is a fun, seat-of-your-pants approach to novel writing. Participants begin writing November 1. The goal is to write a 175-page (50,000-word) novel by midnight, November 30. Valuing enthusiasm and perseverance over painstaking craft, NaNoWriMo is a novel-writing program for everyone who has thought fleetingly about writing a novel but has been scared away by the time and effort involved." • National Park Service, Nature & Science: Teacher Resources "The National Park Service has developed this exemplary set of educational resources which draws on their greatest assets, namely national parks from Maine to Utah. The materials are specifically designed for teaching geology, but it's easy to see how these items could be incorporated into general science classes. The main area on their homepage features over a dozen teacher guides and park programs that feature detailed geology lessons that draw on the landscapes of Yosemite National Park and the dynamic volcanoes of Hawaii. On the right side of the page, visitors can scan through the "Highlights" area to learn more about online park images, park maps, and even peruse a calendar of upcoming educator workshops. The site is rounded out by the "Geology Books and Media" area, which features information about technical reports, textbooks, and geology-themed children's books." (SR)
  • WikiReadia "hundreds of ideas for librarians, teachers, parents, businesses and more to encourage reading in the community." (LIB)
