Book Reviews from participants in the Pollinate Your Mind Summer Reading Club
All Souls by Christine Schutt: Young lady in her senior class dying of cancer who will never make it to college.
Dead Ringer by Lisa Scottoline: Never guessed who the killer was. She is a talented writer. This is the first book I read of hers and I think I will read more.
The Way of Women by Lauraine Snelling: Snelling explores the pain and loss of three women and the mountain itself in the setting of the 1980 eruption of Mt. St. Helens. Friendship and faith enable the women to survive and to begin again, even without easy answers and happy endings. The description of a child's battle with leukemia is especially touching.
Bygones by LaVyrle Spencer: This book was a great read about wonderful people exploring the possibility of taking a second chance on love.
Women and the Lakes II by Frederick Stonehouse: Very interesting to find out about the women. It was not an easy life and many left widowed.
Alcoholism: Myths and Realities by Doug Thurburn. Not written by a doctor-interesting but lacks scientific data in many areas.
Petropolis by Anna Ulinich: This book is a look into the life of a Russian in hard times but she still struggles with "American" problems, like a dad that abandoned her and a teenage pregnancy.
Don't Forget About Me by Cecily Von Ziegesar: The second book from this series I have read. I find books like the Gossip Girl books are part of the problem with many of our youth today. A fantasy book-with all the wrong morals for youth. I think every parent should read one of these books (Gossip Girl) prior to letting their children read these. I'm disappointed if this is the type of book our youth are reading.
Only in Your Dreams by Cecily Von Ziegesar: A good bit of fluff reading. I can understand how young adults would find this book (series) interesting. The Cinderella syndrome. Unfortunately, like too many youth, no one takes responsibility for their actions-everything is handed to them-with one exception the boy who stole did have to pay a price. I would not recommend this book to any teen. Not even my own.
Tampa Burn by Randy White: A kidnapping, an old love, a new love, good read.
Why do I keep doing that? by Dennis Wholey: Good advice with simple applications.
True to the Game II by Teri Woods: I was surprised to see Teri Woods write another book. The first one was better.
True to the Game III by Teri Woods: Not a good follow up to part 1 and part 2. Two much graphic sexual violence.
How Not to be Popular by Jennifer Ziegler: This is an interesting story about a girl's ability to finally find herself.
