Using Hotmail as a secondary address? Be very careful. Filed under: Internet, Security, E-mail, Microsoft
If you're like me, you have at least two email addresses. One of these email addresses is for important business; you hand it out to co-workers, friends, and family, whose emails you actually want to pay regular attention to. The second email address is for other stuff, like signing up for newsletters, shopping online, or creating accounts for services on the web. Also, if you're like me, you might tend to forget to pay attention to that second email address for days, weeks, or months at a time. As it turns out, forgetting to check a free Windows Live Hotmail account might have some dire consequences.
According to the Windows Live help files:
Free Windows Live Hotmail accounts become inactive if you don't sign in for more than 270 days or within the first 10 days after signing up for an account. After an account becomes inactive, all messages, folders, and contacts are deleted. Incoming messages will be sent back to the sender as undeliverable. Your account name is still reserved. However, if the account stays inactive for an additional 90 days, the account name may be permanently deleted. If you don't use your Windows Live ID for 365 days, your Windows Live ID may be permanently deleted.
( The user name and password that you use to sign in to any Windows Live, MSN, or Office Live sites and services. If you have a Passport Network, Hotmail, or Messenger account, you can use it as your Windows Live ID. ) What does this mean to someone who is using a Hotmail address to sign up for things on the web? It means that, once your year of inactivity has passed, anyone can sign up for a Windows Live account with your expired username. The unintentional side effect of this is that if your Windows Live account expires, one could potentially create an account with the same name and use the password reset function on almost any online service attached to that email address, receive the email with the password (or further instructions) and take over your account entirely without your knowledge. This very technique is how the personal accounts of Twitter employees were taken over by malicious users.Continue reading Using Hotmail as a secondary address? Steroid Dangers I can remember back in high school talking to one of my friends on the football team about who on the team he suspected was using steroids. He assured me he didn't, but he did say he took some kind of protein-powder, muscle-building supplement. At the time I figured it was a better option than doing the illegal steroids. However, this week the FDA issued a public warning about products that claim to be to be dietary supplements with steroids or steroid-like substances. Major health problems, such as serious liver damage, stroke, kidney failure and pulmonary embolism have been reported in men between the ages of 22 and 55. These products could also cause the masculinization of women, male infertility and stunted growth in children. Really, a whole bunch of nasty side effects for something that supposedly makes your muscles bigger. There's nothing wrong with wanting to get into better shape, but there's a healthier way to go about doing it. Every day deserves a chance by Max Lucado: Listened to on CD-I loved theidea of facing every day from the point of view of the dog-"It's my favorite!"
It's not about me by Max Lucado: Great reminder!
Darker than Night by John Lutz: Slow moving at times. Still a good read.
Sew Lingerie: it's easy; here's how by Kerstin Martensson: The book was helful if you havecorresponding patterns but some of the pieces are out of date.
Dewey: the small town cat who touched the world by Vicki Myron: Excellentbook on an abandoned kitty who lives and found library. Set to ride in library book cart. Entertains staff.
Second Opinion by Michael Palmer: Palmer's medical mysteries arealways a good read. Enough true medical research andinfo to be believable and frightening. Having a father with a large inoperable brain tumor myself allows me to relate to the brain injury/coma/etc. That Thea's father has-or appeared to have-the opening statement "Question Everything" should be everyone's first line of defense. Excellent book!
Valiant Bride by Jane Peart: A girl lputs aside her own desires to follow her sense of duty and, in the process, becoomes hurt. Faith eventually sees her through. A deeply moving novel.
Piercing the Darkness by Frank Peretti: The sequel to "This Present Darkness." A very good 2nd book. Really enjoyed the spiritual warfare part of the book.
If you really loved me by Ann Rule: Very good! Love Ann Rule.
Blade Itself by Marcus Sakey: Excellent! Very violent, coarse-adult level fantasy.
