Earlier today, after I pointed to Hugo's podcast set-up test, I started to approach the problem from a different angle, I'd thought I'd tried them all. Guess what, it worked! I played all kinds of audio clips straight from the computer through AIM to Dave in Seattle on a test call.
The quest, was to create a setup, without external boxes, whereby you can record voice, mp3 players (or any audio application for that matter) and another person via iChatAV (works with AIM on windows). The other party also has to be able to hear the mixed feed, including audio clips, songs etc. Achieving this without creating piercing feedback loops and echo chambers was the rubik's cube of my week.
Hugo has now posted a diagroam and detailed instructions on setting up a Mac for ultimate multi-person audio recording via the internet. He uses some different apps, which is good since choice is better.
The answer lies in an open source software audio router called Soundflower.
Hugo is working on an ideal virtual studio setup for PodCasters. Sounds like he's about as far as I am, still getting echos back from the other side. He's provided recordings of his research.

I spent some time today thinking about those 9 gigs/day streaming out of my servers. I did some research and can't find any statements from Apple limiting outbound bandwidth on a dot mac account. They do reserve the right to delete content that is 'offensive' etc. Open to interpretation ofcourse.
But if memory serves me correctly, data hosting facilities desire really popular high bandwidth clients, because it gives them leverage over networks who want or currently peer with them to reduce their own cost, because their customers are sucking down all those gigs :)
Randy Morin: "Who should implement RSS readers and RSS publishers? How useful is this mechanism?
This is a must read for all RSS developers."
I agree wholeheartedly, especially with the iPodder development we're putting some pretty simple aggregators out there that are sucking down large quantities of data.

We've got a healthy discussion going about podcasting bandwidth usage. Personally I i feel that paying Apple $400 a year for 1 Gig of storage and all the bandwidth I can pump out a good deal. BTW, because of their network and peering contracts you can assume that 9 gigs/day doesn't carry the same cost as it may for ABC hosting service.

Is bittorrent going to save us from bandwidth bills? Or is using a service like Apple's dot mac hosting/serving platform a better deal and more reliable?
At this rate, not many folks will want their podcasts to be popular. BTW, I see this as only a minor bump in the road, one that will be solved by technology or economies of scale, either way, we win.
